Unprofessionalism, is it a big factor for a good working relationship?

I am currently a part time teacher at an English School for Koreans. I just started last week as I was just also hired last week. Of course, being a new teacher i the school, I have to make sure to be as friendly as possible to avoid conflicts and develop good working relations with other teachers. There's no problem to that because some of the teachers who have been there for quite sometime are also friendly. But what I was so upset and disappointed about was this one encounter I had with one of the administration officer (I think the head of the Accounting). I went to the office because I asked for a whiteboard marker because the whiteboard marker they gave me the day before got lost in my own cubicle in the teacher's office and I didn't know who took it. So when I was already at the office, I asked the person in charge if I can ask for aother marker. Then, she asked the head of the accounting if she can give me another one. Know what the head of the accounting told me, she told me this in a very unprofessional manner, "Next time, you better take care of you things and not lose them because we are not a factory of whiteboard markers here!". I fell silent. I didn't know what to say. Is it my fault that somebody got my marker in my room without asking permission? all the other teachers also leave their markers in their own cubicle. I mean, she could have been professional enough to say it in a professional manner right? Does she have to treat me like that just because I'm a new teacher? what do you guys think?

Uhm... is the head of the accounting a CPA? if not... that explains it... hehehe :) Not everyone, but most non-CPAs tend to be more strict that the license holders. I'm telling you this out of my own experiences. Kinda defense mechanism or something that these people have in common: insecurities. The license holders are well-mannered, maybe because they themselves have nothing to worry about when it comes to promotion or being the head of offices. They are far more secured and are easy to deal with.

Oh, that's really unprofessional. Don't worry, it's common. Newbies usually get that, especially when they're being tested as to how far they'd go, which I totally don't understand. It's like, are we in a fraternity of some kind, wherein the neophytes have to take the slack in order to get accepted? That really sucks, and I have experienced that in every job I had been to. Anyway, just show that administration officer that unlike her, you're professional. Sooner or later, she'd realize that. You know that you didn't do anything wrong, so she has a problem, not you. Hehe. Welcome to myLot!

No it is not your fault that someone took your marker. Yes she should of been more professional enough. No, she should be more pleasant to the new teachers and give them advice. I think she owes you a apology because it is not your fault that people burrow or take things that are not there. I would take it to the admistration office and tell them what is going on and see if they have any opinion. Or go out and buy some and put your name on it. Or take the marker with you when you leave your cubicle.

it is really sad when we encounteer those kind of stuff in our work...sometimes we need to adjust on certain things especially with our workmates to avoid conflict...these things affect our work. it's really hard when we have a workmate that is unprofessional. i think we should be responsible in our obligations at work and should have a good relationship with our workmates...
