Another potatoe question

If any of you saw my last potatoe discussion, I got some great answers to my question. Well, several of you HAVE heard of eating potatoes and getting food poisoning if they are left out too long. Well, the reason--apparently--is because of solinine or something like that. Well, my next question now is...what about eating raw potatoes??? I remember when I was little, my mom would always give me a couple of slices of raw potatoe when she was cutting them up. (Imagine that...she's scared to die of eating a cooked potatoe a couple hours later, but will give her kids RAW ones!) LOL Anyhow, did any of you eat raw potatoes and would that solinine (sp?) be poisonous? Just curious!

Well I had never thought about eating raw potato but since you asked I did a little research ... The solanine is present in the skin and the sprouts so always peel your potatoe - thick peel - and remove any sprout or any greenish coloring if you really want to eat raw potato you could but in very small quantity Here is a very interesting review on it : www.drlam.com/opinion/rawpotato.cfm Enjoy ! ;-)

I have heard about being poisoned from eating both raw and green parts of potatoes. So, I do not eat them :) as a child I would be given a slice of raw potato on occasion but no more than that. I always loved the taste of it at first bite, the crispness, the cool moisture - but it left such a tallowness on the roof of my mouth, that I did not like at all.

I have never heard of people getting sick from eating potatoes. We always ate them raw when we were kids adnd I gave raw potatoes to my children.

I tried raw potato never liked it, but as a kid I has afriend who would just eat them up, he never got unwell though.
