Why freshwater aquarium fishkeeping as a hobby?

Why aquariums? Why not dogs or cats? Contrary to popular beliefs, aquarium fish keeping is not an expensive hobby. Especially if you will only keep those smaller tanks, about 15 to 75 gallons type. Imagine, I had my first 15 gallons for only $15, including the power head/filter and the fish itself.... Any takers???

Hi! I have both, cats and aquariums! LOL Cats are my first love, I hope to always have a cat, but since August I have gotten into fishkeeping and I really, really enjoy it. My fish make me very happy! I'm about to start my third aquarium - an african cichlid tank. I'm so excited! I wish I could get the tanks so cheaply, that seems to be the expensive part. Maybe that's because I live in a rural area and the only places to buy tanks are at high priced local stores or Wallyworld. At least it's only $30 for the 10 gallon starter kit. For example, blood parrots here have gone from $26 to almost $60. I saw blood parrots at Petsmart in a larger area for $8.99. I'm probably just a victim of where I live! :-)

In my place, I can get a 90 gallon aquarium with stand and all accessories for about $100, but it's glass, not the plexiglass type. I got my OSCARs for about $1 each... Goodluck to you!

You are correct about the aquariums. Mine was a lot more expensive than yours but after the initial expense it only costs a few euros every six months for a tin of food. I now have mine for five years and I only clean it out once every year. I wash the filter every week and I have an algae eater so the water stays very clean. I can buy block food when I am going on holidays so there is now need for a fish sitter...lol. It is also very relaxing to watch the fish swimming around and I could spend my day doing this.

And one of the best thing about aquarium fish keeping is that you don't have to clean for litters! And yes you are right, me myself spend lots of time just watching my fishes. I now have 2-15 gallons, and hopefully, when I get home, I will buy my 2nd and 3rd 75 gallons or 90 gallons. Later, I'm planning to build an aquarium house in our backyard...
