Ear-piercing for children

I have a 4 years old girl. I was wondering what is the right age to have her ears pierced? My Sis-in-law's daughter had her daughter's pierced at 1 month old. I was worried of infection for the child. Is it advisable to have them done at that age? What about the pain factor?

I think it is okay to have them pierced when they are still little! I got my daughters done when she was 7 months old, but they grew closed so we will have to do it again if she ever wants too =) She is 6 so it is her decision now. I think it is better when they are little so they don't remember the pain, as long as the ears are taken care of they shouldn't get an infection.
