How do you teach a child to blow their nose?

I know this subject could be gross to some, so I'm reaching out to the more experienced than me moms out there. My son is three and a big boy, and he has a cold. He will not let me hold him down any longer and use that suction thing to clean out his nose and he doesn't know how to blow into a kleenex. Help!!! Any suggestions would be most appreciated since he is most unhappy right now with a clogged up nose, which in turn makes me very unhappy. Thanks in advance...

I suppose you must have seen the doctor. There is a kind of drops - I think it is called illiadin. According to doctor, it is good for clearing the nose congestion. If not Vicks vapouriser should be good. Rub on the nose and the shoulder and the back. Sleep with big space where natural air is ample. Have a speedy recovery.

Thanks. We haven't seen the doctor, I've got one of those doctors that doesn't think a child should come in except for very high fevers or serious chest congestion.

Get him his own box of tissues, maybe some with cute pictures on them. Tell him he is a big boy now and you will only help him when he asks, or if you see his nose running a lot. You may have to look at a pretty gross-looking nose for a day or two, but he is old enough to start doing it on his own, and I'll bet it won't take him long to learn. Sometimes blowing makes a clogged up nose worse. Wiping works better.

Thank you, I think I'll try that. He's a very picky child so he doesn't like it when it runs so he might do very well with this method, or he'll decorate the house with tissues. Either way he'll be happier!

The only way I taught my daughter how to blow her nose is show her how to. Even if I don't have a cold I get a tissue, I gave her a tissue and let her watch me. If she suck it in instead of blowing it, I repeat is again until she gets that she needs to expel the air out. They tend to imitate us adults so it will be easier if we demonstrate it. For cold, the good ole Vicks always works for me with my daughter.

You are right, my son loves to imitate. I've tried this a couple times so I'll just keep trying. Thanks so much.

Gross subject, yes. I taught my children to as soon as they were ready. My daughter knew how to one year old. You just show them. Even show them without the tissue what you do if they dont get it. That is gross i know, but do it in the bathroom over the sink or something, so they can see. Let them do the same and feel the snot come out and relieve that stuffy feeling. I hope he feels better soon. Take care!

Thanks for your response, I'm not sure if I can do this one though, might be a little too gross for me.

I taught my son by holding a tissue over his nose and closing off one nostril and telling him to blow. When you see his nose running you may want to try this.

Thanks. I've actually tried this one but he only understands how to blow out of his mouth so far, I'll keep trying with him.
