A friend of mine has been invited to go with friends to visit their family in Africa. The problem is she is terrified to fly.She says she used to fly but after all the air crashes in the last few years she doesn't think she can fly.Does anyone know anything she can do to feel better about getting on the plane? Help please,I'd hate to have her miss this trip of a lifetime. Raydene

I don't know how to cope your friend's fears of fly. But I think Air transport is still the safest mode of transport if we compares the number of accident with total number of flights daily. This even safer than traveling by car. Maybe if you present statistical data about this, you can make her sure that air transport is just as safe as walking on road side.

Drink. Ok, I shouldn't condone that, but I do know a lot of people who take that route. Seriously, nothing gets over a fear than just staring it in the face. Just get on the plane, breathe deeply, close your eyes, pray and she'll be just fine. Bring things on the plane to distract her. Like earphones for music or a book. that might help too. good luck

I used to have the biggest fear of flying and I will admit it is still not my most favorite thing to do. I was in the Canadian Military and posted in Edmonton, when 2 hercules when down over the base. What a mess. I was on the base defence team, so part of my duties was guarding reckage and stuff like that. I developed a real fear of flying after that. The first time I had to go on a plane ride, I actually had to go to the doctor and get a sedative to relax me enough to get on the plane. Maybe this is something she needs to consider. There are group therapy sessions for people with fear of flying too.
