Why do people cling so strongly to religion?

I'm not saying that believing in god is a bad thing, just that it doesn't make much sense. Anywho, what's wrong with spirituality? Why can't people simply have their own crazy beliefs (like angels, god(s), magic, heaven, etc..) and just that? Why do they need to by into a fear driven system that's used to discriminate against others? I understand that in some theocratic states, it is either that or become an enemy of the state, which makes enough sense to me, but what of people in america? Why can't christians simply be good people, like jesus intended? They run around hate mongering against gays, pro-choice people, democrats, people of any other religion, people of other ethnic groups, and so on. Is it really that hard to just love one another? That is really at the core of all spirituality on earth, both past and present. It is through the actions of humans in the divine, the hierarchical structuring of the cosomos and of men that has led ideas of superiority and discrimination in the name of religion. How is this so hard for rational minds to realize?
