Recently I was informed that my children would have to start learning Spanish in Kindergarden and they would be taught that along with english up to 6th grade. I personally have a problem with this because my kids are having enough problems with english. That and we live in America not Spain or Mexico. Is anyone else facing this issue, and what are your thoughts on it?

whoa! thats WAY too early for a kid to start learning any language other than his own mother tongue. that is just outting too much unneccessary burden on a young mind and is totally uncalled for. while the intention itself is laudable( a new language is an added bonus anytime and also, learning new languages keeps one's mind sharp and alert), its implementation is dodgy. such schemes should be launched at higher classes and then only for those students willing to undertake such classes. and as for living in USA, learning spanish still is a pretty good idea as its a language spoken by many people. but i still maintain that a young mind should not be encumbered by such things.

I agree. By making kids learn it that early and that long, it means it is a cultural thing, like they are trying to institute spanish as a second official language just to accomodate immigrants that won't learn english. Before it was an educational matter, you knew it if you were educated and learned it for learning reasons. It seems to me that this is appeasement of invaders of our culture, and we should be forcing non-English speakers to learn english in our country instead of accommodating their needs.

My kids school tried that it didn't fly very well with the parents so the school reverted back to offering it as a high school elective. Course I'm still trying to figure out when they changed the laws about becoming a citizen. It use to be you had to learn some English before you could become a citizen.
