explaining divorce to young children

My mother in law is getting a divorce. Although her soon to be ex is not biologically my daughters grandfather he was married to my MIL when she was born. This is something that has happened quickly(and it has been ugly.) I have shielded my daughter from this thus far but the time is going to come when she is going to ask about grandpa and seeing as how my MIL and he are not talking at all I am not sure how to handle it. She is not going to be able to have a relationship with him due to his bad actions. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tell my daughter in a childs language?
