What to read after the Narnia Chronicles ?

March 10, 2007 4:20am CST
I have just finished reading the Narnia books to my son, who loved them and was wondering what people would recommend to read with him next ? We have read the Harry Potter's - waiting on the new one - the Lord of the Rings and are listening to the Hobbit at the moment. He enjoys the links between a series if books. He is seven but has a much higher reading age as he has Aspergers. Looking forward to hearing any suggestions Many thanks

As you seem to be in a fantasy/sci-fi phase, I would highly recommend any of the following books: A Wrinkle in Time/A Wind in the Door, by Madeline L'Engle-- These are great books, there is a male character involved, which I tried to take into consideration. These books are absolutely magical, and were some of my favorites at that age. The Wizard of Oz, by Frank Baum -- Baum has actually written a bunch of Oz books, so there's your series. The characters are well written, and it should be a familiar story. I've read a few of them, and they're worth the read. Anything by Roald Dahl, James & the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, any of his work. I'm not sure what reading level they are, as it's been a long time since I've read them, but they're excellent books. They've got that magical, fantasy aspect to them, and both have male protagonists, which should be a plus. Finding good books is hard sometimes, and I'm always full of recommendations! Let me know if these help at all!

I recommend the Vampire Chronicles. Maybe you will like it and start reading more types of books.

How about the Hardy Boys series? They aren't exactly linked, except through the common characters. I don't know if anyone has updated the books to make them more contemporary (the ones I read were written in the fifties and sixties).

A series that I enjoyed (although it was written for kids) was Lemony Snickett's A series of Unfortunate Events. The movie might have thrown you but believe me the books are worth the read. Another series I liked was The Boxcar Children but its an older series and can be hard to find. I picked a couple of them up for my son at a thrift store and he really enjoyed them.
