Las Vegas Living

I may possibly be moving to Vegas within the next 2 years. I was wondering if anyone out there lives there and can tell me what some pros and cons are for living there. I have been down there 3 times on vacation and for business, but never stayed for more than about 2 weeks. I know cost of living is higher than where I am (Georgia) and I'm not concerned about that. But in general, what's it like? How are the people? The traffic? The weather? Etc.

Cons: The traffic is terrible, and don't even bother with the public transportation system, it's pathetic. The weather is only bad in the summer - the fall, winter, and spring are really quite beautiful. Every building has air conditioning so the summer heat is easily avoided unless you work outdoors. Some people don't like the monsoon season and the huge walls of dust that come before the rain storms but that doesn't last very long. When I have been there I have found people in general to not be very friendly but that's just my impression. There are no boundary laws for building, so there is a lot of sprawl and the distances to drive to see friends can be pretty far. The smut-pamphlets littering the strip are irritating. A lot of people smoke (I consider this a bad thing) and allergies are really bad. Pros: It's easy to find places open late, and pretty easy to find a job if you don't mind working hours that aren't M-F 8-5. There are some very pretty hiking spots near Mt. Charleston and Red Rock Canyon. The city is always changing - blowing up old casinos and building new larger ones - and it can be fun to watch. Nice to have no income tax too. There are some great restaurants and fun places to bring friends who come on vacation.

Thank you. I enjoy visiting there - but I always wondered what it was like to live there. I currently moved back to Hawaii - but Vegas is still on my list of places to live.

I have lived in Las Vegas since 1978 and I have to say I still love living in Vegas. I use to come out and visit my Aunt and Uncle when I was 13-16 and then my brother moved out and talked me into moving out by him...I grew up in Minnesota so you can see it was a big change for me...The weather is something I do like. The winters aren't real cold. Some years yes it has gotten down to freezing, but usually it is like in the 40's. And it doesn't stay cold for that many months. Dec., Jan and part of Feb can be cold. But like now in March it has gotten to 87 and it isn't that hot as the air is a dry air. The summer time can and does get hot..July and August are the months that it gets real hot. The highest I have seen one year was 120, but once again it is all dry air so you really don't feel it that much once you are here for a bit. Everything has air cond. as you can't stand it without it... As far as coruption it is no different then many big cities. Yes we have crime here just like any other big city.. And it also depends what part of the Valley you live in...Same as how much your rent will be if you are to rent a Apt. the nicer the area the higher the rent is. But all and all it isn't that bad, as you can earn good money and a good living here... One thing you have to be careful about is getting addicted to gambling. That is a problem with many here as it is a 24/7 city. No matter what time you wake up you can go anywhere and do shopping, drink and gamble. The city is always busy. The people here are from all over the world, sometimes it is hard to make friends as everyone works strange hours. But I have met over the years many wonderful ones. Just like in any other city. The traffic is getting very bad, but not like Calif. freeways yet. Once you live here you will learn to take the back streets to get to many areas and stay away from the freeways as they are so busy. But you can get accross from one side of the valley to the other in about 30 to 45 minutes. All depends where you are going.... We have many new housing areas that are really really nice. I have always liked the West side of town. But now in North Las Vegas is really growing and many new nice areas away from the old area... It kinda is all in what you are looking for and depends what kind of work you will be doing...For me I can't move to Minnesota the cold since I had back surgery with 2 plates and 4 screws in my lower back...I was just back to Minnesota as my mom passed away and it was way to cold for me..By blood is thinned out for the weather in Las Vegas, so when it is like 80 + here it is nice, not real hot.. We don't have any humid weather unless it is going to rain, and we don't get much here..April and May we get some, and then in July and August we get some summer storms. But it doesn't last long.... I hope I helped you somewhat...I have to say I love living here. But the saying is, "You either love it or you hate living here"...It all depends on what you are looking for here....
