i thought the movie got boring right before the actual gladiator scenes. i liked the begining scenes of the battle and such but once his family is killed it goes downhill

I think you are missing the whole point in respect of the story. The movie was a total success. It portrays the heartless dictatorship of the Romans; If you were not for them, you had to suffer for being against them.
There is no way the movie enters a boring period. Maybe English is not your first or second language. Dialog is the one thing that either make or break a moie. If the dialog is poor, the movie will be poor; if good or excellent, the movie will follow that trend.
I believe that Gladiator was made with a lot of research behind it. Surely you don't only want to see action? You want to see a movie with intelligent story-line. In my opinion: It was, and is one of the best movies of the past two decades.

The fact that his family is killed is a part of the plot of he movie and this helps the overall suspense and emotion to the picture.Gladiator is a masterpiece of a movie in my opinion and the actors all performed superb.

yes i agree the movie is named Gladiator not Maximus Great General of the Romans for a reason the movie focuses on his life as a gladiator
and his fight to get revenge for his family the opening sceans and the fight's whit the barbarians are just some introductory scenes to his past and so we can now that he was a general and why he ultimately succeeds in his quest in the end
