Should Hospitals be charged when an infant is stolen at their hospital?

It's been in the news this week that a days old baby was stolen from a hospital in Lubbock, TX. The lady who sole the baby, pretended to be a hospital worker and literally took the baby from her mother's arms. Should the hospital be held responsible for this? The news also said that the lady had an ID tag that was forged on her. This just doesn't make sense to me. I think that the hospital should be held responsible because apparently, they did not have the right security features.

the woman who stole the baby she be held responsible. She forged the ID, she planned it out.. They apparently had security measures, she just went around them - so she knew what she was doing.. The hospital is negligent, but the blame is totally on the person.

I agree, I don't think it was all the hospital's fault, that lady is the kidnapper, but I do think they should hold some responsibility.

I just read on the news that the woman had taken the baby to New Mexico and she was arrested and the baby was found unharmed and sent back to her mother in Texas. I was so happy to hear this and hope they give this woman life imprisonment for doing this horrible act. The hospital is responsible and some ways, though from reading the article they do have some security measures in place. Fortunately it did not take long for them to find the baby.

Well, I think in the end the hospital will pay dearly for that! Don't you? I know they are careful to watch that doesn't happen but it does

I think they should also. I don't think that it is all they're fault, how would they know some luanatic would come in and steal a baby, but there should be protocols available to make sure that things like this do not happen.

Oh yeah that hospital will definitely pay for this even though the baby wasn't taken from the nursery, It was taken from the mothers room. There needs to be more security on the maternity floor and all nurses should have to sign in with the head nurse before they are allowed on this floor. In this case the old way of doing things would have prevented this from happening. So much can go wrong when we depend on new technology. Thank God she was caught in Mexico and the baby, which is doing fine, has been returned to it's mother.

I thought they put censors on the babies now to sound an alarm if I baby leaves that area. Another thing is didn't the other nurses notice someone new around them and question that? Something did go wrong somewhere in that hospital. I have been in hospitals that make you sign in when you enter. Understand she had a forged ID but, was it an inside job? Had she been there before? Sorry a few questions. If I was a parent I would hold the hospital responsible. This has happened before and that is why they have these securities in place. The woman will get her punishment I am sure, and the hospital needs to rethink the safety of their little patients.

Well I read the article on this. The woman was dressed as a nurse and had a forged ID. The baby had some health issues and shen went in saying the baby needed some testing done. Once she had the baby she removed the censor and left. She was though viewed on videotape that cameras had about the place.

I think most hospitals have this in place, and also, most nurseries require a scan of your ID to enter. Personally, I think all labor and delivery floors should be built circular with the nurses desk in the center and 2 people manning a circumference, that way each room would always be under close observation because, while one went to check her assigned patients, the other would stay at the desk to keep that watchful eye. It would mean hiring more nurses or aides, but well worth it. I think a team of 10 would be good.

Yes, I agree that hospitals should be liable for these kind of incidents. Like here in Manila, just recently, there was some sort of switching of two babies from the hospital nursery. The name of the baby on the crib tag was different from the name on the wrist tag of the baby. Then one mother went home with the wrong baby and she was asked to bring the baby back to the hospital when they found out about the mistake. I heard from the news that the mother was still kinda dazed and confused about the whole incident. Hospitals should be more careful about these things.

I think this hospital needs to do something about their security, because obviously they are not taken proper measures to ensure their patient safety. I work at a hospital, we have ID badges, that CAN NOT be forged, all doors are by swiping only, in the infant department mothers and family have to call for assistance because theyres two doors that need ID swipes witht he microchips and then a door where you need to be verified to enter. Then every few months the hospital run Code White drills in order to make sure that every employee in their hospital is doing their part to help.

Yes, I think they should be held responsible; should be prosecuted and have to pay the mother and extraordinary amount of financial damages. Nothing can make up for the loss of a child, no matter how it happens, but this is just ridiculous. Hospitals don't have enough security as it is. I mean, as it is, anybody can walk into a hospital (which is fine) but hospital's need to and should know who they have working for them. I mean, come on now!

Yes I think that the hospital should be held responsible. They said that the hospital was high in security but obviously not high enough if someone could walk in there, pose as a nurse, and take the baby. However, im not sure how preventable it is. My best friend just had a little boy on Friday and I think the hospital is like most; anyone can walk into a room. They just assume that you are visitors. Now once you get in the room, what yoou say to the mother is a different story. So while security needs to be taken up a tad bit at all hospitals to prevent this kind of thing, it is still the parents responsibility to make sure that they know who is taking their child. There are usually the same nurses that tend to you and your baby while you are in the hospital. Make sure you know. I'm not blaming the mother; but if she didnt recognize the nurse, she should have hit the nurse call button and asked for verification. That is what I would have done. Too many people want babies and are willing to do too much to take them, you've just got to be more careful and aware of your surroundings.

I also was very disturbed by this. Definitely, the hospital should be held accountable for this, so should the security, and other staff. This is not the first time this has happened, and probably won't be the last. They need to put an electronic bracelet on these infants that can only be removed when the baby leaves with its mother. If someone else tries to take the baby an alarm will ring to alert hospital and staff. Maybe then they'll do their job.Until they come up with a secure plan to protect these infants, yes they should be held responsible for they're well-being. I pray this baby is found soon, not for nothing, you can't be too stable anyway to steal someone's child. I am praying for the baby and family for a safe and happy return.

Shame on those hospitals where these incidents are taking place.I would suggest that everybody in these places especially the administration should be put behind the bars.

In nowadays we are heard several times that infant are stolen from the hospitals. The only one who suffer from this is the parents of that infant. Now,this is the responsibility of hospital to provide security to the child taken birth there. And if any thing goes wrong then hospital have to make some commitment about the searching of that infant and about the parents of the newly born baby.

I agree. what a horrible thing to go throuh to loss a child because someone stole the the baby. The hospital should of had better securtiy . Such as with our hospital the doors are locked and you must call in to get in. So there for you let them know who you are and if your on the list you get in. The desk is right there so the nurses see you when you go to the room. Our town is small you would think that lubbock tx would have something to this effect in there hospitals. I feel so bad for the mother who had to go through this. So yes I say the hospital sould be responsable for this.

I definitely think hospitals should be charged, especially when an incident like the one above occurs. I mean, to begin with, the woman was dressed like a hospital worker. Do they not keep track of their workers? Do they not know their own kind from an imposter? They need better security, especially in the neonatal part of the hospital. People stealing infants has become more common and you would think that would lead to better security procedures.

I agree with you, a child is in the protection of the hospital until both mother and child are discharged to go home. If they arrived home and the baby had been kidnapped it would have been a different story...but then would the mom be charged? A hospital situation is different...this poor mother had her child snatched from her arms and stolen away, I do think the hospital should be held accountable. Their security measures need to be improved big time.
