The interesting thing about Irshad Manji is that she still considers herself Muslim in some respects. She wants to work within Islam to reform it, rather than just throwing Islam away and taking some other religion. I agree that she is a heroine, and someone we should all take inspiration from, whatever our religion. Part of the problem isn't the religion itself, it's the fact that this religion has control of the countries involved. Theocracy is bad, no matter what religion it is that is in control. It leads to loss of personal and religious freedom, persection, and unfair legal and political structures. Also to be considered is the fact that Muslim views toward a lot of things, especially treatment of women, have very little to do with religion, and a lot to do with culture. It may seem like a very small difference, but much of what is known as "Islam" actually comes from Arabic culture at the time that Islam came about. I very much agree with Irshad Manji that the religion needs some serious modernization, and I admire her in all the work that she does towards that goal.

I agree wholeheartedly. There are so many people who change religions because of things they disagree with rather than trying to reform something they truly have faith in. I think everyone should do anything they can to support brave people like Manji. I've read "The Trouble With Islam Today" borrowed from a friend, but I think I'm going to buy a copy anyway. It's not much, but it's something I can do to show support. Obviously not being Muslim myself, there isn't much I can do to get involved, but it's a start.

reformation/modernization of islam... interesting... much of what we see as "cultural corruption" of islam can be found and is preserved in its foundational texts... to carry out the daunting task of reforming/modernizing the religion, therefore, muslims must do away with their qur'an and the ahadith. problem is, muslims believe that the former, being the final and eternal word of Allah, cannot be replaced, modified or changed... and the ahadith stand on equal footing. ...so it's like taking out the water from the ice and see what's left... ...nevertheless, muslims like irshad manji are indeed admirable.
