I don't think hitting or spanking them is the answer. We as parents should explain first that what they did was wrong and explain the punishment or consequences if they did it again. Children commits mistakes too and we should teach them and guide them to what's right.

I think it is important to be strict with your children and make sure they know the rules of the house. However there is no need to hit them to tell them this, they just need to be told 'no' and if they don't respond give them time out.
