Its not easy being green - new series

March 12, 2007 4:40pm CST
For those who live in the UK there is a new series of 'its not easy being green' starting on Thursday 22/03/2007 on BBC2. Its not easy being green is a documentary series about being 'green' and reducing our impact on the environment. In the first series Dick Strawbridge and his family moved into a run down farmhouse in Cornwall and lived the 'green life' by installing windturbines, a water wheel, keeping pigs and growing their own food. In the second series they travel around the UK meeting other families who have 'gone green' I love the idea of living in the country and living a sustainable lifestyle, I think a bit of hard work, fresh air and good food would probably also mean you would live a longer and happier life!

I hope the series will be bought by our alternative broadcasting company. They broadcasted Penny Poyser's: No waste like home last year and I liked that very much.

That sounds like an interesting program - is there a website about it?

I think it's just a romantic dream! Hard work, fresh air and good food are just fine for a while then reality sets in. There's the long term commitment, you can't sneak off for a weekend if you have animals to look after for example. Green is great but in moderation and without devoting all of your time and energy to it - there's a lot more aspects of life worthy of attention. Mike.

I agree with some of what you are saying, yes it is a dream, but one that can happen. With two young children I understand all about commitment and not being able to sneak off for a weekend! Being green, like all things in life is best handled in moderation. The great thing about being green is that it often means saving money as well, for saving money is the same as earning it!

Thanks for the reminder to tune into the series. I wish they'd do a program on corporations saving CO2. I'm sure they'd save a lot more CO2 for a given effort/cost than a household. I'm a little worried at all the emphasis in the media about how "hard" it is to be green. I fear people are thinking it's just too much effort (see BBC have your say threads on Green issues to get a feel for this). There is a real danger that people decide to do nothing at all simply out of rebellion at how difficult it all seems.

Some corporations are starting to think about their carbon footprint. The corporation I work for are planning to be carbon nuetral in 10years, although they will probably have to it by offsetting (buying a load of trees). You are right that people need to realise that it's not hard to be green, often it just requires a small amount of effort and common sense.

Thanks for giving such a nice information. I am supposed to be transferred to UK. So I think I will surely watch this.
