My mom just passed away after a courageous nine year battle with heart disease. When she was first diagnosed the doctor only gave her a few weeks to live and wanted us to call in hospice, we told mom that we wouldn't do that. She was with us another nine very full years. She got to see both of my sisters get married, the birth of two more grandchildren, my daughter graduate from both High School and College. She told us she didn't want to be on life support, so when they put her on a ventilator and told us that she would not recover, we told them to turn off the machines. Her heart was too weak, for the last nine years she was with us, she was living on the center of her heart, and the last couple of months, her systems were shutting down. She had signed donor papers years ago to donate her body to Emory School of Medicine, she always said that her body could teach a lot to students, about heart disease and the effects of 40 years of smoking. My husband and I are also going that route. We feel it's a wonderful gift! We won't be able to be organ donors but we'll help medical students, and that's important too. Would you ever consider donating your body to science when you die?

I'm so sorry for your loss gapeach, but at the same time I admire your mother's strong will and determination to live. I can say she had a very good family to love here and hence she wanted to live:) It is a good thought to donate bodies for furthering medical research. In fact there is an organization which accepts bodies and preserves them through a process called plastination. I will let you know of the website if I find it. I personally would love to donate my organs after I pass on. I'm not sure of my whole body since my family might not want that.

Holy no! I can't stand my body being cut up and displayed and analyse for the sake of science. Donating organs directly is another thing but to be fondled by thousands of hagged old men and women... no way! :P
