back to the quill

having always loved writing and written plays for an amature dramatics group in my teens, written my first (rather poor) novel at 18/19, I have finally decided to return. What is concerning me is how complex the industry is and how diffcult it is to build a reputation. Currently I am exploring different styles and toying with many ideas. What i think i need is some focus. A way forward. I realsie that when approaching a publisher or agent it is best to have as much great stuff to say about yourself as possible or they may not get past that covering letter. Therefore i want to build experience and a profile of sorts. What websites or magazines etc are a good place to start? How on earth do you crack into this industry so full of pitfalls? Is self publishuing a good option or is it simply giving up on finding a proper publisher? BAsically when it comes down to it... Where do i begin :) other than getting off line and sitting down and writing stuff of course.
