Yes, they are indeed helping in determining categories of discussions here in myLot.
Assuming that we're adding a tag named "money" to a money related discussion, when we use the search function (chosing myLot as a criteria) we find all the discussions tagged with money, in reverse order (first discussions is the one who has the recent answer).

As you probably figure it out the number next to your myLot name represents the number of posts (responses in other members discussions).
The star and the number within represents how myLot members are valued here, mostly through other members point of view.
Basically every member with 100+ posts can have a star rating (with a number from 1 to 10, 10 being of course the highest) based on the quality of their activity here, lenght of responses, relevance to the subject in discussion, etc
Your star rating (once awarded) can raise up and maintain to a higher rate if you got Best responses or "+" ratings on your responses in other members discussions.

Well, the tags work as keywords.When you do a search on the Mylot search engine selecting the tags you will see results with discussions using the tags.So, it's to help us find the topics we are looking for.The tags also help when the spiders of other search engines crawl on the pages of Mylot.That way, when someone does a search ,then this page might come up in the search engines.So,adding relevant tags to our discussions is very important.

The tag is to catergorize the discussion. In case someone wants to find a discussion about a certain subject. The star is rewarded after 100 post and the rating is given by mylot depedning on the positive ratings you have received. It is based on 100 mine is a 10, but if you put your cursor on the star you will see 99/100 on mine, which means I think, I have 99 out 100 positive ratings. If you receive negative ratings your number goes down.
