Do you let your kids pick the sport they want to play no matter the cost?

We let our kids pick what sport they want to play. My oldest has picked hockey and he is also a goalie. He has been playing since he was 5 y/o and he is almost 13 now. I did not realize that hockey is one of the most expensive sports to play and when your child is a goalie it is even more expensive. So do you let them pick no matter what the cost?

I totally agree they are only kids once. This is why our son plays the sport he wanted. We spend around 3500.00 a year on hockey not including the travel costs(gas, hotel, food, airline tickets) I asked because I have a friend who can not afford sports for her kids so they can not do sports and I feel bad for them. I would go out of my way to find a way for my kids to do the sport they wanted if I did not have the money. I am so glad thats not the case but some famlies just can't swing it. I think there should be some type of help for famlies who can't afford sports.

No, I don't. I also take int oaccount how much time they take up and which days they are on. My kids play hockey, Gaelic and Rugby, along with a lot of other lessons like art and music so we have to be very choosy before considering adding anything else to the mix. I definately want to get my money's worth, as well.

I think that you should allow him to play the sport that he loves more than the others. I would not want to force my child to play a sport that he or she did not like. It should be their choice but I guess it would depend if you had the money to buy the equipment that he needs. I would try to be supportive of my child. Maybe he can play a different position in the same sport. My parents let me choose what sports that I wanted to play when I was younger.

Yeah, we let our kids play what they want to play. Last fall my son played soccer and loved it and this spring he is already signed up for teeball and my daughter is signed up for her first year of ball too. I agree with jjwatson28, they are only young once and it is good for them to get out there and run and play sports. It's also a great way for them to make friends.
