How do i improve the sound on my compaq Laptop?

How can i increase the sound of my laptop. Even at the highest, it's just not loud enough. I've tried the advanced controls option and also have the latest drivers. Is there some sort of Sound Enhancer or such software that i can use? Would a good set of headphones from Bose or Sennheiser help improve the sound?

Here is some conspiracy theory for you. I believe that Compaq/HP purposely has poor sound quality to force you to buy external speakers. My Toshiba laptop had the same problem.
