Gumbo Roux

How many of you make your roux? Or do you buy it out the store? I buy mines from the store, it saves time and I know I won't end up burning it, lol.

I make my own. I live in Louisana and I prefer to make my own. Your house will smell, but I prefer homemade to store roux. This was asked 2 years ago and I am answering it LOL!!

I always make my own in a big pot with a whisk. I've only burnt it once, but boy did i burn it. My house smelled terrible for almost the whole day! the only thing that exorcised the smell was the smell of the gumbo I eventually got going the second time around, after I made another batch of roux. I've got a friend who always burns hers, so when she's making gumbo she just goes heavy on the okra and that thickens it pretty well also. if you like okra :)

I make my own roux. Growing up I lived in Louisiana and learned to do this from an old man who lived on a boat. It really isn't difficult.
