Who here worked for Denny's 25-30 years ago?

Cover of Denny's Employee Handbook in 1979 - What a hoot huh? That was the old uniform! Oh ya, I forgot, the hostesses wore the scarf too! In this picture. This was back in the late 1970's... maybe early 80's.

Do you remember the rules for hair styles back then? Oh my goodness! I STILL have my employee handbook. I am posting two pictures from my old Denny's handbook. We were not allowed to wear ponytails or braids. We had to have a 'style'. Since I had hair to the middle of my back, I had to buy a hairpiece! Yes, a hairpiece! It was styled like an older lady would wear her hair on top of her head. It was horrendous! But, that was the rule back then. We also had those funky A line polyester one piece-zip up the back with side panel uniforms! The hostesses had orange and brown tiny striped plaid down the side panels & the center was brown. The waitresses had brown side panels and the plaid for the front and back. Oh how fun those were when a girl was feeling bloated! Finally, before my Dennydroid days were over, we went to a brown skirt and a white blouse with little thin stripes. All cotton. I loved the district I was in. I was in Colorado and I must have had the very best district in the United States. I thought all Denny's were as good to work for and eat at as where I worked. But, then I moved and traveled a lot and learned that there can be a vast difference from one Denny's to another. I was a traveling trainer for Denny's so I worked in a lot of them. I went to other states and towns and trained entire crews to open a new Denny's. Sometimes, I went to other stores to just do some training on old crews that needed help. When I first became a manager, I was a relief manager for stores who's General Manager was on vacation or leave of absence. I would go to their store, Denny's would put me up in a hotel and I'd work there. It was fun, but hard. I was young so I got along really well with the employees usually. Now that I'm 50 years old, I'm not so sure if the young waiters and waitresses would like this old woman telling them what to do!Ahhhhhhhhh, the good old days. If you worked at Denny's before, write me so we can chat!

Hi Doris! I have a couple of pictures of me in my Denny's uniform posted on my FB page. I had an elderly lady friend who made me a quilt out of all my old uniforms in 1984! I have a picture of it on my FB page too. I went to FB to find you, but there are several Doris Mitchell's! See if you are able to find me, Renae Tolbert.

I've never worked for Denny's ... but I enjoyed your post! I never would have thought that a restaurant would demand you had a hair style ... so much so that you had to wear a hair piece! That uniform on your picture looks pretty cool from a vintage/retro perspective.

I worked for Denny's from May 2005 - June 2006 (that's when I left for medical reasons). So, no I didn't work there that long ago, but I really did enjoy reading this. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for that post, Renae. I worked at Denny's from 1983 - 1988. We had the brown polyester wrap skirts and striped blouses with vests. Our hair was to be styled so that it didn't touch our shoulders. So I would twist my long hair into a tight bun. Jewelry was limited to just a watch and wedding band. Earrings were permitted for females only and they had to be small posts no bigger than a dime. No hoops or dangling ones. Nail polish was to be clear or buff. Makeup had to be minimal. I witnessed a young "dolled-up" waitress being told to go wash her face or go home. Tattoos were to be covered up. Males were permitted to grow moustaches only to a certain tasteful length. It sounds somewhat like boot camp, but a bit of structure is important in a corporate setting. I was a trainer also, so I do recall all those rules and regulations. How many times have I heard the phrase, "That's not spec!" Times certainly have changed.
