Anyone have kids in scouts? My son decided to join Boy Scouts tonight. We went to the meeting and it seems very overwhleming for the parents.

My oldest daughter joined girl scouts this year. She's a Brownie and has had 2 meetings so far (her third is on Monday). She loves it but I was a bit overwhelmed. The girl scouts do a "MagNut" sale at the beginning of the school year so we joined just as they were starting this sale. We hadn't even paid our dues and we were expected to hauk goods for the scouts. We didn't sell any of it. Oh well. It is only $10 to join the girl scouts. But we also have troop dues because it is a new troop without any other financial backing. We haven't paid those dues yet because we can't afford them right now. We also are trying to figure out where to get the money for her uniform. I'm sure we will figure it out. In 2 years my younger daughter will join and be a Daisy Scout and I think a year or two after that my son will be old enough for Cub Scouts. Should be interesting. I, myself, was never a scout. Oh and just plug in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts in your search engine and it should bring you to their site and they have links to local Councils for more info. That is how I initially looked at the stuff then they recruited at my daughter's school and that is how we joined.

We paid dues, but I haven't gotten the unfiorm yet. You should talk to the Girl Scout Association in your area. Many times they have uniforms dontated to them. I haven't looked into the cost of unfiroms, but I know they are pretty expensive.

For Boy Scouts you have to have the full uniform - shirt, shorts (thankfully we have blue school shorts & pants here), hat, starter badges, neck ties, etc etc. I am sure I am looking at well over $100.

Yes, they do have financial aid for girls. Her uniform really isn't that bad. Girls only need their vest (or sash) and their initial insignia. It is supposed to cost $29 total. But she wants the whole uniform (shirt, shorts, beanie and socks). That is going to be over $100.

I have/had 3 sons in Boy Scouts. My oldest son is an Eagle Scout. My 2nd son will be an Eagle Scout within 3 to 4 months. Maybe they through to much info all at once at you. Give it a chance and some time. Yes, there are some requirements to achieve to advance in ranks. Our troop trys to do as much of that as possible at the troop meetings as well at the camp-outs. Our troop is aware that kids are involved in other activities other than scouts. As well as there is homework. Our family has found Boy Scouts to be a very positive experience for the whole family.

I was a girl scout for 12 years as a child and now I am a leader. It is a great program for children.

I totally agree with you. I was scout for close to 13 years myself. I stopped Scouting when I was in highschool because the only troop of that level split up. I hope he sticks with this through HS and to get his Eagle scout.

You must realize that with all of the legal problems many youth programs are vunerable to that they have to cya, in addition they want parental involvement and they often have that one moment to sell you on helping. I myself was not a boy scout but was a Police Explorer and a Naval Sea Cadet.

I agree scouting is a very positive experience. I was in the girl scouts and my borther in the boy scouts. The issue that we are facing with the little ones is that all of the leaders left the area. So all of the parents who were just looking to join a group, have to become leaders. I know it is going to be tough. My mom was a cub scout leader and a girl scout leader (at the same time), so I saw how hard it was for her. Just seems almost impossible for parents who work and go to school to take on.

Look in your phone book. Look under youth organizations, then Boy Scouts of America. It can be a bit different for other parts of the country. It shouldn't cost much if anything to participate in your Local Boy Scout Troop. Call your local boy scout office for information.

Thanks for your help. My sonjust joined a troop last week. It was $11.10 for a half year. So $22.20 for a full year. That includes getting the boys life magazine. We just attended a meeting that was held at his school.
