Why do people say this... "I need space"..

What are the reasons why people say this lines to us? Is it just an excuse? or anything like wanting to avoid the relationship?... Why do u think so?

Sometimes people do need space, I know I do and lets face it, it is a nice way to tell someone that they do need a little time on their own....
