Calling a known person by CLAPPING !!!!

While walking on the road when we happen to see a known person walking at a small distance ahead of us its a common site to see we call him/her by clapping.We never realise hearing our clapping lot of people turn towards us to know who called them.Its a very bad habit and uncivilised manner.How do you react to my opinion?

Ha ha ha..... You are right, but i dont find any other go. If the known person is somewhere close by then we can run and call them but if they are getting into some public transport or if they are riding a two wheeler then there is no other go other than clapping :(
