Sleep and memory

I just read an article about sleeping. German and French scientists discovered a connection between sleep and memory. When we are awaken, the brain is collecting information. When we are sleeping, it is sorting and storing it. So for students it seems to be much better to sleep well in the night before exams and not to sit the whole night awaken studying. Is it really so, what do you think? I guess, it is.

This sounds odd since my dreams very seldom make much sense. Maybe I am sorting out of order or something. I have always studied the night before, relaxed, watched some TV, then got a good nights sleep. looked over everything right before the exam and I did real well with this process. I have tried studying right up until the exam and was too tired to even know what was being asked. So part of this may be true.

I remember, we tried to read even on the way to the university on our exam days. A couple of times it even worked but usually it didn't.

I hade a good sleep this morning..I have been so sleep deprived of late and I realized that I got a lot more work done now than I had done for several days without the proper amount of sleep.Definitely a good sleep pays dividends and aids the brain.

I'm a night animal. I'd like to have a good sleep every morning... Unfortunately my boss and the clients are not paying any attention to my needs!

I took a psych class years ago. He advised to study ,read over the info before going to sleep and in the morning read over again. The professor said during the night the brain would porcess the material and in the morning you remind it of the info. This worked better for me then long nights going over and over the study material.

Yes, perhaps if I'd started to study something now I'd be wiser and let my brain process everything I read during the night. But as a student... you know...

That sounds reasonable to me. That would explain alot as far as my grades went when I did alot of partying instead of sleeping.

I found it in our local newspaper. They quoted another article published in German magazine "Die Welt".

I think there have been a few research studies on this subject. It is good to sleep well before an exam, but that has to be within a limit too - oversleeping before an exam can hurt as well (need that adrenaline after all). A reasonable good night's rest is important. If there is a lot of studying to do, better to do that way ahead of exam time (at the expense of some sleep if necessary!) and revise the day before the exam.

Oversleeping isn't good, of course. It's individual, how much a person needs sleep. I haven't found out yet an optimal amount of sleep for myself. Perhaps 7 or 8 hours.

I always made it a habit to sleep the night tight before the exam it not only made me feel fresh and energetic , it also made me confident ,why i dont know though. I never had the idea of the collection and sorting but i belived that if i sleep then my brain will get relaxed and i can perform well the next day , more-over not much is achived studing the day before the exam.
