My daughter is 5 months old and my doctor is recommending that I start her on rice cereal to possibly help alleviate her acid reflux. I'm very hesitant to start her this early, especially since she was born almost 2 months prematurely and we're having a hard time getting her to gain weight. What age did you start your baby on solids and what solids did you start with?

I started at 3-4 months because my son was eating so much. He was never full no matter what, so his Ped recommended rice cereal, However rice cereal is pretty much just a filler, so i used Cream Of Wheat instead which has some vitamins in it. better then an empty food. He slowed down on the eating and his weight gain which had been really fast slowed a bit. After the rice cereal we gave applesause, and veggies from the garden that we creamed. He loved veggies. :)

Starting her on solids will probably help her gain a bit of weight though. It didnt with my son because he cut back on other feedings. Which isnt supposed to be normal lol. It stablized his gain. But solids should help her gain.

I'm worried about the rice cereal though. Like you said, isn't it mostly just kind of a filler with no nutritional value? I'm worried that she'll get filled up on that and then won't want to nurse the 8 times a day that she's still supposed to be doing.

It's been a long time ago, and I had an 8.6 pound girl, but she started with rice cereal diluted with mixed fruit and expressed milk when she was about 4 or 5 months old. We diluted it since it was completely different than the liquids & the thickness took some time to get used to. If you start adding just a little of the powdered rice cereal to the usual liquids, and increase it a little at a time you may have better results. :)

At that age are they able to figure out how to eat from a spoon, especially with it being so diluted?

Ideally, babies can start eating solids as early as 6 months old. In my case, my daughter started to eat solids at 7 months. I initially gave her rice cereals. 1 tablespoon with 2 ounces of water. Give her lots of water so that she won't have a hard time digesting. Try giving solids once a day for 2 weeks. Then eventually, you can increase it to twice a day. I hope this helps.
