I'm not sure if this would "technically" count as being mathematical since that term is rather broad but here's another try: if you add ONE cup of popcorn to ONE cup of milk you still have ONE cup of (well I don't know what it's called but whatever it is it's only one cup worth)...this theory would work with salt and water as well giving the same answer of 1 plus 1 equals 1. another possibility is by using the example of haystacks, if you add 1 haystack to 1 haystack you have 1 (bigger) haystack, again 1 plus 1 equals 1 the third I think of right now is if you are actually removing something as in the case of adding 1 lit match to 1 newspaper, 1 plus 1 equals 0 I'm quite curious to see how this turns out as I'm guessing this is the type of riddle with an extraordinarily obvious answer.

thatz really witty too... but then thatz not the answer im really looking for. its too complex for a simple minded mind to easily grasp.

here is the answer... when is one plus one not equal to two??? using simple logic for this simple and elementary mathematical equation... one plus one is not equal to two is WHEN the ANSWER is WRONG.

that was a stupid answer.

there are mathematical tricks to prove that 1 + 1 ? 2 though the 'solutions' only seem to be logical and simple at first understanding..but totally misleading when strutinized, anyway if we assume or take it within the context of mathematics 'without figurative or visual inkling' like the union of man and woman, a lego brick and another lego brick joined, 1 part Carbon and 1 part Oxygen makes CO (carbon monoxide), 1 matchstick plus another makes symbols, solving anagram, spiritual sense, etc.. then 1 + 1 ? 2 is only valid for number systems that are less than base-3 system like digital or binary, or simply any system that does not use the number 2. known sytems like octal, decimal, hexadecimal use the number 2.

i have another idea.. 19 + 13 =32 1 + 1 ? 2 ..when there exist a carry digit. imaginary isn't it??

..i misspelled scrutinized to 'strutinized' and my mistake, binary 1 + 1 is still equal to 2 but only in terms of 0 and 1. may i mention also that roman numerals differ only in symbols, I + I = II..still 2.

According to "Synergy" 1+1=3. That is the outome of two factors of production when grouped together is more than the sum of the outcome of the factors independently.

one plus is equal to one also, how so you may ask? simple, let do it scientficly. you put one drop water on the table, and you add another drop on to it, now you still have one drop of water, even though it is alittle bigger but it is still one drop, so therefor if you do it the math it is equal to two, but if you do it the science way it is one. there is my answer

are you trying to create a statement but representing the numbers in their numerical true form rather than its textual value, like - "when is one plus one not equal to two" which can be speculated that any answer that is not a derivative of two in any form will become an obvious wrong answer. i hope things will make sense.

That is very simple and I did not go through the other responses. If you put one and one together without the plus, it will be eleven. Also when you say it in a different language. I cannot give a more detailed answer to this.

I'm thinking it is when 1 man marries 1 woman they become 1 with each other and have 1 life together. So in that instance 1 plus 1 equals 1.

Here are two possible answers. 1. If the asker is a boss, and answerer is a accountant man, the answer is: And what do you want it to be, boss? 2. The mathematical answer. 1,4 you usual round down to 1. Thus 1,4 + 1,4 - may be said is 1 + 1 but after everything is done will be 2,8 - ie rounded up to 3... Thus 1+1 may stricktly mathematical be 3.
