Why is basketball such a popular game in the USA?

When I was studying in the states, every college seem to have full priority on basketball as the prime sport. I don't seem to understand but still go to watch some of the games. In fact, every college has scholarship for basketball players. What makes basketball so popular in the states? What is the history of this popularity?

I tried my hand at basketball when I was in secondary school. Well, I never made the mark at this sport. So, the best I am at this game is to sit at the benches and watch and cheer whichever team is my favourite.

I don't know about the US but I love basketball and it's popular in many countries, it needs smaller fields and played indoor so it can be played around the year despite the weather, it's fast and exciting..

I think that actually football might be more popular than basketball, but I'm not 100% sure of it. There seems to be much more hype about it. I think basketball is so popular because of the history of the game, and how it's become a national pastime. Also, there's a lot of fast action, and people feel like they can become good at it...they can play it in high school, college, and it's a high scoring game. For example, since soccer is not a high scoring game, it's not as popular as basketball. That's my opinion anyway. Also, people who have gone to certain schools end up loving certain players and the teams they end up playing for.

I think the main reason why basketball is so popular in the U.S. because of the fact that James Naismith invented this game on 1891.During the 1970's era Dr. J, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russel were among the great players in the NBA that made this game popularize. In the 1980's it was the showtime Lakers and Celtics rivalry even made it to be more popular sports in the likes of Abdul Jabbar,Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.It was in the name of MJ of Chicago Bulls which made the game basketball the most popular sports in the world.Michael Jordan is considered the greatest Basketball player in this planet.Everybody knows of his talent and skills that's why he was the most popular NBA player . Among others were Charles Barkley,Shaquille O'Neal and Scottie Pippen. Of course the Class of 2003 dominates the NBA right now. There was Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, and the 2005-2006 NBA Finals MVP of the Eventual Champion Miami Heat.
