Does your cat love plastic bags too?

My cat loves plastic bags. If I want to make her happy, I leave one on the floor and she'll lay on it and lick it. Does anyone else's cat love plastic bags? Does anyone know why she likes them so much?

You should check out this discussion: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/873310.aspx It's something I wondered about too as my cat loves licking, chewing and climbing into plastic bags. You should be careful though, apparently it can be dangerous as it says in the above link.

Excellent, thanks very much. I checked out the link and I agree - very good info there. I thought there must be something about the taste that makes her enjoy licking them so much so the fish oil thing makes sense. I will be extremely careful from now on...I certainly wouldn't want my HunnyBunny (that's her name) to have plastic stuck in her intestines.

mine like the noise plastic bags make and also like to lay on them. They also like pieces of paper on the floor to sit on too strangely. It's amazing that something as simple as a plastic bag or pile of paper gives my cats more comfort than the basket I bought them that they never sit in.

How true is that?! My cat has her own bed but never sleeps in it. She chooses "her chair" instead. It's a big old lazy-boy type rocker. No one else sits in it but her.

I have a cat that likes boxes. He'll find the smallest box he can fit into a nap. We also have a corn stove, so we leave our paper bags that the corn comes in open and in the living room. BOTH of our cats like to crawl around and play peek-a-boo in them. Silly felines!!!

My cat likes boxes too but not paper bags. She seems to prefer shoe boxes.

My cats also love bags and boxes. My older cat loves to lick plastic bags and also magazines. I think I read somewhere that licking plastic is a sign of boredom, so maybe they are trying to get our attention so we will play with them.

Yes, breaking the handles off is a good idea, I do that too. You might be right about that noise thing too....

I have no idea. But my cats will lick ANY kind of plastic bag or wrapping. I think it's something about the way they taste. (One of them even licks and nibbles at tape. But she's a bit odd sometimes, lol!)

My cat doesnt lick plastic bags but if theres a plastic bag on the floor she loves to go and sit in it! If Ive got a plastic bag in my hand she'll be jumping all over the place until i put it down so she can sit in it. Shes really crazy. Then I have to play with her while shes sitting inside the plastic bag. She loves the simplest of things.

Mine do love plastic but I'm afraid they will get tangled up in the bag.. I do let them have paper bags though. I think they like the crinkling sound and the mystery of thinking they are hiding from something. I love it.

Yes, several of my cats love plastic bags. Some only like them for the crinkle-sound, and others like to eat them. It's apparently a sort of survival mechanism. The ones that eat plastic are looking for roughage like they would get if they were outside and could nosh on vegetation - and this helps them regurgitate hairballs by irritating the inside of the digestive tract. It's very important that you discourage plastic eating, and attempt to take any nearly swallowed plastic away before the cats swallows it. Over time, some plastics will melt partially and gum up the digestive tract, or cause plugs to form in the internal organs. Eventually these may lead to mortality. Provide alternatives, such as catnip and barley grass (found at most pet stores). Aid your cat in removal of hairballs by brushing during shedding months and occasional dosing of hairball remedies. I have finally found a salmon-flavored hairball remedy that many of my cats like. Introduce it as a treat, and you may find dosing is much easier! Otherwise, the easiest way is to smear it on their paws. They will be forced to lick it off, though watch it - you've got to get it on securely, or you may find blobs of it on you furniture! Hairballs are a serious matte, too. I have one cat who absolutely refuses to regurgitate them, and he needs to be does on a regular basis. Watch your cats as if they were your children, and take any cat who is hawking everyday to the Vet if it lasts more than a few days. Also watch to see if every cat is defecating properly, at least once a day. Sometimes only a Vet can remove a blockage. Keep vigilant! Your cats ARE your children. ;)

My cats don't try to eat the plastic bags but they do love to crawl around in them and attack each other through the bags. I don't leave the bags down when I'm not around, I've had two of my cats get stuck in the handles and panic.
