What exactly keeps people from wanting to leave thier home? I have alot of idea's why but I would like to know more about this phobia. How does one overcome such a strong urge to stay put indoors amongst the comfort of thier home? What are some ways to get them out of the house and convince them that it will be okay?

My home is my comfort zone and I just feel safe here. I would rather stay home and never leave. I actually spent a whole year in my house a few years back and the only time I left was when I actually had to move and then I stayed locked up in the new house. I never went out because I felt I was ugly and that everyone was looking at me. I had a weight problem and I just felt like everyone was ashamed of me. I'm doing better now though. I actually got out of the house once again and went on a road trip and moved here where I'm at now to be closer with my family. I like it where I am now. I do try to keep in the house as much as I can, but I live closer to my family now and they come around almost everyday and I get out more. It's nice, but I still feel my house is the best comfort zone for me. But I have kids and they love going to the park and I been going to the park a lot. So it's a start.

First I'd like to say that I didn't know they had a name for it, leave it to doctors, they have a name for everything nowadays. I personally don't like leaving my apartment for several reasons, one of them is both me and my cat are old so I want to spend as much time with her as I can. Another is because it keeps me out of trouble, I'm sort of a 'vigilante' and will not hesitate to involve myself if I should see or hear something that ain't right for usally I bite off more I can chew. Another is because many times I'd get tempted to go back to my old ways of being a shopaholic. LOL I'm quite happy and content living a solitude life. I'm not lonely at all.

Hi uriegas60 here, Agoriphobia is like any other phobia it can be treated my medication or counceling, depends on how bad the person is. With me i had a panic attack on an airplane after that it was really hard to get back on a plane so with counceling and medication I was able to fly again but everybody is different. Remember don't ever try to force anybody to do something they are not ready to do it could make it worse.Seek Profesional adive before doing anything!!! I hope my spelling is ok?
