No..I am a mother first...and I have a great relationship with my daughter but I don't put it on the friends level...this is unconditional love, daughters need a mom more than a friend.

Of course she can! Why couldn't she?? Isnt that what a mother is there for? To be your friend?

No, a Mother is there to be a Parent. To love, nuture, guide and be a parent. I think you can't be friends until in your 20's. As a teenage, they are looking for advise of how to deal with relationships, work, school, boys. They are looking to learn how to cook, sew, repair things. They don't want a friendship, they need the boundaries. How do you disapline your teen for breaking your rules if she is now your buddy?

As long as her friendship comes after her being a mother, sure she can. Infact I think it's important to be friends with your kids to an extent.

I believe you have to be a parent all the time. You can be a fun friendly parent, but no were the boundaries are. You must always maintain the respect level as a parent!

What age is your sister? After about 23, I think you can become friends after the teen is an adult and living on their own. Otherwise, the teen still needs the parent to be just that, a parent.

yes, teens do hate their parents, because they want a friend, but a friend (even a parent) can not give them the direction they crave because the respect level is not the same for parents vs friend. Parents are so wrapped up in their own lives, they don't want the conflict with their teens and become friends with them and lose control with how to give guidelines and directions. Thanks for your reply.

she can try...but the thing to remember is that no matter how hard the mother tries, there's just some things that a daughter doesn't want to confide in her mother about!

yes, and as a parent are you sure you want to even hear those confessions? Hearing those secrets of a teen, would you react as a parent or the friend that you've become? It is that difficult line to walk. Yes, you have to be informed and a part of your teens life, but crossing over to be their friend is risky. It is serious, the teen will want a friend with the sympathetic ear not the parent that is out to ground them for life. thanks for your reply.

Yes of course why not. It all depends on how both off them mix up vit each other. Whether the mom can understand her if something is gone wrong from her. Its not easy topics which all moms can face so easily.
