I live in Northern California where there is little rain. We are rationed to only every other day waterings for our lawns. I was wondering what is the best way to keep the grass green with watering only every other day.

A tall fescue is a good heat tolerant grass. There are dwarf varieties which go by the name of dwarf tall fescue which seems to be a contradiction but they are a very hardy grass variety. it also stays green all year. Your other choice would be bermuda which can tolerate the heat even better but turns brown (goes dormant) in the winter. If there is an Orchard Supply Hardware near you they will have a better selection then the big warehouse home improvement stores. You could also look at a local nursery.

Maybe you can put down a nice ground cover that requires less water.Snow on the mountain, certain vincas. They are prettier and don't have to be mowed but shouldn't be planted in traffic areas as they won't live if stomped alot Hope that helps R
