ebook... do you read them?

I have a friend told me about it once.., ain't it illegal to do so? With copyright laws and such? I won't mind reading one online though. Are we able to download and print? Because its a strain in the eye to read long texts on the computer monitor. Thanks for the Info. Cheers!
