Can we change things or do we just moan?

I was just wondering have you ever seen something and thought 'something should be done about that!' and then actually tried to do something. or do you leave it for someone else to sort out? A few years ago the local bus route used to go past our local primary school, down a very narrow road where the school run mums and dads had to park to drop off and collect their kids! To make matters worse the timetable meant that the bus was always running just as the kids were going into and leaving school, After a few weeks of noticing a few ' near misses' and worrying about when not if a child was going to get seriously hurt I decided that something had to be done and if no one else was going to do anything about it then I would! Unsure as to where to start I called the education dept, health and safety department and even the roads department at our local council - none of them could or would help! Eventually I got through to a very nice man at the planning department who took all the details and said he would look into it. Sure, I thought cynically, and pigs might fly! The very next day I received a phone call asking if I could meet the nice planning man at the road in question that afternoon, of course along I went to explain to him and reps from the council, bus company etc exactly what the problem was! I received another phone call the next morning to tell me that it was actually against the law for the bus to be using that particular road and within a matter of days the bus road was adapted! Now the kids are a bit safer and whenever I start to complain about something I actually ask myself if there is something I can do to change things rather than just complain! Do any of you guys have a similar experience? Was it easy to change things or were you just given the run around?

Hi Hon You're so good.I'm proud of you.I said you had strong shoulders. Your story is heroic and I can not compare to that but I do have one. Every summer we went to our county fair.We bring the camper and stay on the grounds cause where our horses go we go.Every year there were so many unsafe things going on especially around the horse shows and areas.Horses are large animals that can hurt someone without meaning to if not handled correctly. I was a clerk for one of the shows and I was aware of the legimate complaints. Finally a few years ago I ran for fair board and am on the board and talked my horsey friend into coming on also so that we could change things. Then the man that superintended the fair horse show gave it up and another woman took over .I continued to clerk but it went poorly and I did alot of the super's job.So the next year someone else did the show but I didn't clerk(my choise)went poorly again.Next year same person was doing it but wanted a different day.We (fair board) didn't give her that day so she wouldn't do the show and it was 2 months prior to the date.Horse shows take months to plan but I got stuck with it but it went well. The next year I just took it because then I knew it would be planned and carried out and I wouldn't get stuck at the last minute. That's how I became superintendant of the fair horse shows(we now have 2) R

I wouldn't say I did anything heroic but achieving it before a child was hurt is probably something that I am most proud of achieving (apart from the 2 horrors!) Sounds like you are doing a mighty good job with the horse fair too - you should be proud of yourself honey, cos I'm certainly proud to call you my friend! xxxx

Thank you honey - can you imagine how horrific it would have been if a child was seriously hurt or killed - wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I hadn't at least tried!

No I always seem to get the run around lol So I gave the Idea up a long time ago of being able to make things better. Where I lived before we reported a Car that was going to fast for that particular road and one Day a child will get hurt but we are still being ignored on it.

You did well! I have never really been in a similar position but if I do try to change or question something I will follow through to the end. Eventually whomever it is I am dealing with will hear me out and at least give me advice because they are fed up with me bugging them and they just want to get rid of me...I don't care as long as they help me out I don't give rat's hiney why they are doing it.

Well firstly it depends on what it is but I do try to do things myself to get it out of the way, but if not I will leave it to my husband. I think that a lot of the department could not careless not until someone is killed and then they may consider it!! Most of the time when I have tried to change things I am given the run around but I think at the moment due to our voting going to be done soon that this is the best time to do it so that they will have more chance of being voted in.

Good for you pal! xx People can change things if they think and go about it the right way! As a person with a disability I am very often my own advocate and if something needs to change or be done I often have to step in and do something about it myself. Alot of the bus drivers in my area don't realise that I can't see the bus stop coming up and that I rely on them to actually let me off where I've asked. So many of them are good but the so many times I've had to walk back 4, 5 or 6 stops and being late for appointments (which I hate) is annoying to say the least. I went to the bus company and explained the situation. I, as well as other people with varying degrees of visual impairment, are going to be giving a talk to the drivers in the next few weeks (there are alot of them)to explain how much we depend on them, what it's like for us travelling and that should help :)

Mummymo has a very good point. You don't know if you don't try. (Sorry if I misspelled) Too many people just complain that nothing ever gets done but don't try to do anything themselves.

You know what? The world will never change...and you know why? Most people have the "i'd love to change the wor, but i don't know what to do so i'll leave it up to you" attitude. (Yes, i stole that line form an Alvin Lee song.) Sadly, it is the truth. And you know what else? i don't know what to do, either...as much as i woul dlvoe to change the world. i don't know where to start. Sure, i am myself, i have my morals and i follow them, i have strong convictions...but all that won't change the world. i notice i do a lot of complaining, but when it comes to taking action, i don't know what to do...otherwise i would do it. When i have the chance to make a difference, however, to do it, even if i am pretty sure it won't work out. i sigh all the petitions i believe in that are outside of WalMart and Target and wherever else. i vote. i have even written to my congress people. Doesn't seem to have done too much for the world, though.

I'd say you make a change for the better just by being a part of the world!! Small steps help and I do hope that you're wrong and that even if in only very small ways we can all take steps to change the world - otherwise what is the point!

Most times ,I follow others ideas.Maybe,I am a lazy man.It induces many losses. And if you want to change things, you'll find you can't manege them.Mostly,It's beyong your ability.Just when I find sth. is too dislikely to accept,I will try to change it ,Even I can't do it,i want to be lonely, fighting for my goal.

Congratulations on actually doing something to make a change. that is what is sad with America. We don't do enough to make changes for the better. Nobody takes a stand anymore. The rest of the world stand in front of tanks, protest, and do anything else to make themselves heard. What do we do? Eat McDonald's (which I do love, but besides the point). I write. I call my blogs rants since I am usually taking a stand on some sort of an issue. I know it's not making actualy change, like you did, but I like to think I plant a seed, but maybe that is just my own wishful thinking. LOL. Congratulations again!

Thank you tweakpotter - I do love a good old rant sometimes - it lets everything out and stops it embittering you! I believe you're writing is doing just as much good as any direct action - you may in fact reach more people and once that seed is planted (in , hopefully, fertile minds) you never know just how much you may be achieving! Keep up the good work honey - I'm on another campaign at the moment so think of me as I fight the dog poop issue !!!lol
