Was John McCain right to refuse to discuss the morality of homosexuality?

Recently, when Republican presidential candidate John McCain was asked whether he agrees with General Peter Pace that homosexuality is immoral, McCain refused to answer the question. John McCain would neither say that homosexuality is immoral, nor say that homosexuality is not immoral. Was this the right decision for Senator McCain to make? Can you support a presidential candidate who refuses to answer such questions? What kind of answer would prefer that John McCain give to this question? See http://www.irregulartimes.com/index.php/archives/2007/03/13/military-immorality/ for more information on General Peter Pace's comment.
