Alcohol, what's so good about it?

I started drinking when I was in High School. I lived in an asian country with an almost non-existent drinking law. I've tasted different kinds of alcoholic drinks from beer to spirits like tequila, gin, rum, vodka and whiskey. even local fermented rice and coconut wine. I never did enjoy drinking though, for me it was more like a thing you do with your peers or relatives when there's a special occasion. I definitely don't like it with any of my meals. It's bitter, gets you drunk plus a terrible hang over in the morning (sometimes). So aside from getting drunk, which some people would probably consider a good part of drinking alcohol. What's so good about alcoholic drinks? It's bitter.. or is my tongue just different from everyone else? How do you drink it? Do you just chug it down straight, or do you savor the taste? How would you define a good alcoholic drink?
