The Jewish-Islamic-Christian Triad

This is something I've always been curious about. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity all derive their beliefs from some of the same historical sources. Exactly what differs in the three? What beliefs do Muslims hold that Jews do not? Same with Christianity and its many many subsects. Do Muslims believe that Christians believe wrongly? What is the other religion doing wrong, in their opinion, if anything? I personally consider myself something of an agnostic, so I don't have a specific stance on this, but I'm curious about your views.

Judiasm is at the heart of all three religions - or at least Muslim and Christianity grew from Judiasm. First there was Judiasm. In the book of Exodous it is told that Abraham (or Israel, as he is often referred to) has a wife and they cannot conceive a child together. God tells Abraham that his descendents will be as numerous as the stars in the sky and that He will give his descenents the land (of Israel) as their inheritance. But Abraham does not wait upon God's promise, for he and his wife Sarah are getting older and he cannot see how she can bear a child. So Abraham lies with his wife Sarah's maidservant and they conceive a child and a son is born to her. But Sarah is jealous, and she forces Abraham to cast the child and his mother out into the desert to fend for themselves. And that child becomes the head of the tribe of Islam. Which is why Islam and Israel claim to have their Holy ground upon the same site - because they all trace back to a common ancestor. God promised Jews a Messiah. And Jesus was that Messiah, but since the Jews were so oppressed at that time (by Rome), they expected a Messiah to deliver them from Rome, NOT from sin. Jesus fulfilled all of the prophesies from the old testament, but Jews do not consider this. For instance, in Judiasm, a child's lineage is from the mother, not the father. If a child has a Jewish father but not a Jewish mother, the child is not Jewish unless it converts. Consequently, if a child has a Jewish mother but not a Jewish father, the child is Jewish. Now, the Messiah was not only prophesied to be born of a virgin and born in Bethlehem, but He was prophesied to be born in the lineage of King David. Jews point to Joseph as being of the line of David, but since not only doesn't that count in Jewish lineage, but since God is the child's father and not Joseph, the Jews say that Jesus wasn't of the line of David. But Mary was! Mary is a direct descendant of David. Why the Jews don't look at this is beyond me. So Christianity is the fullfillment of Judiasm with the Messiah. And after the Messiah came, things changed. We were no longer bound by the rules - Christ had set us free. Which is not to say that we now were going to go on sinning. But that now our faith is not in showing that we're believers (Jews) by outward signs, but rather showing that we've been redeemed through Christ - inwardly. So Judiasm is the belief in God Jehovah. And Christianity is the belief in God Jehovah, but through his son Jesus. Jews believe that Christians are wrong. Christians believe that Jews stopped short of the goal and are still putting on binoculars looking for the finishing line while they're standing on it. I'm not up on Islam enough to describe to you what they believe. They do believe in Jesus - that he was a prophet and the son of God and sinless, but that somehow, their prophet is better and has had more revealed to him even though he's not proposed to be the son of god or even sinless. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me! How can you beat the sinless son of God? But whatever. Muslims think that Jews and Christians are both wrong. Jews believe everyone but them is wrong. Christians believe that anyone who doesn't believe in Christ as the Messiah is wrong.

Thank you for what seems to be a detailed explanation of the situation.

i agree!!! but let me add something, Mary is a descendant of David, it was overlooked because of the patriarchal culture of the hebrews. they count only men, women and children are not as important as men. The Old Testament, the basis for judaism, and the Quoran, have striking similarities. Although Christ is not recognized in the Quran as the Messiah, He is recognized as a prophet and given respect as such, including His mother, Mary. As for the Muslims, those who do not believe in Mohammed as prophet does not believe in Allah and are considered infidels. But if all three religions supposedly bring man closer to God, that would be the testament of every religion. Just as long as you live your life according to the tenets of being a good human being with a conscience, become a good christian, a good muslim or a good jew, i believe that the confusion between the three religions will be resolved.

I am a Christian and I follow the Christian religion laid down in the Holy Bible. I think that in Judaism, they do not believe that the Lord Iesous Christ is the Messiah sent by God and so in the New Testament, it was the Jews who caused the crucifixion of the Lord Iesous Christ because they did not believe in Him and until now, they have been waiting for the coming of the Messiah. The Islam religion is similar to Judaism in the sense that they do not also believe in the Lord Iesous Christ. They believe in Mohammed who founded the Islam religion in about the year 600. They follow the Quran. Faith plays the big role here. I believe in God and the Holy Bible as the Word of God and it is the truth. Others are free to choose whatever religion they want to follow. We are given wisdom and free will. You say yourself to be something of an agnostic, well, that's up to you, but I hope you study the Holy Bible very well for that is the source of life.

Hi! Hang on there, there are jew who believe in Jesus, but we call Him Yeshua. We are Messianic Jews. You really must understand more about jews before making statements like "jews don't believe in the Messiah." Also, all jews believe in the Messiah, the difference is that Messianic jews believe Yeshua was here when He said He was, the rest are still waiting for what they believe will be His first visit to earth.

That's true. I've always heard that it's not that Jews don't believe in the Messiah idea, but rather that they believe the Messiah simply hasn't shown up yet.

Some of what has been expressed here is just simply wrong. Judaism is the oldest of these religions and Islam the youngest. Christianity completes the prophesies of Judaism and Christ establishes a new covenant with God, superseding the old one. Islam is not prophesied in Biblical scripture is a re-work of previous scripture in order to unit Christian Arab tribes who were quarrelling at the time about the exact nature of Jesus. hope that helps, all the best urban

the reason behind their similarity is that christianity and judaisms are the derivatives of Islam. All the messangers sent from God came with the same basic message which was changed by the humans as tiime passed thus God sent another messanger and removed all those who disbelieved HIm,the last message was the ISLAM but this time God did noit destroy those who disbelived Him but has given them a chance to return to their original faith,i.e.Islam, which gives a complete way of leading a healthy life.

Again factually wrong, it is amazing that followers of a faith are so ignorant. Judaism is the oldest religion, Christ fufilled all the prophesies of Judaism and established a new covenant with God. Muhammad, who is not prophesised in scripture, re-wrote scripture for his own end all the best urban

Penfencer you posse a good question that no one seems to look at. All three religions believe in some of the same things, but in different ways. Like for instance Christians believe in Jesus as some sort of saint, while Muslims believe in Jesus as one of God's Prophets. No more and no less. We believe in all of the Prophets from Adam, Jesus, Moses, Ibrahim.....many more and then the last one Mohammad. The biggest problem between Islam and Christianity is the fact that we believe in Jesus as I mentioned above as one of God's Prophets, while the Christians believe other wise. Also Muslims believe in one God period. Muslims believe in Heaven and Hell, while some Christian don't believe in Hell. I did a paper once on Christianity and that's what I found out. Now as for the Jewish religion, I honestly don't know much about them.

The Jewish religion follows the Old Testament with some modifications. The Christian religion has the Old Testament and the New Testament together which is called the Holy Bible which is the word of God. Christians follow the Holy Bible. Islam was founded by Mohammed in about the year 600 and follows the Quran.

I don't have any specific response to your discussion, but from all the responses posted here I got an idea of what these three religions are and your discussion was very much informative. Thank you Penfencer for that. My religion is none of the three, it is Hinduism, supposed to be one of the oldest in the world. Though I am not religious, I do belive that all religions preach and stands for the betterment of mankind (Not only mankind but the well-being of everything in nature.) All religions advocate love and not hatred. To me no religion is superior or inferior. Once again thank you Penfencer for a good post.

Hi, The primary difference, and the one that counts, is: Whom do you say Jesus Christ is? Genuine Christians know that Jesus Christ is God; He came to earth as Emmanuel (God with us); the Messiah. The others (Judaism & Islam) you mentioned don't hold to these truths. Again, there are many differences but the diety of Christ is the major one. Jesus Chirst is the savior of the world. I must say this; being "something of an agnostic" is dangerous because: 1. If there isn't a God then you end up with nothing when you die. 2. If there is a God then you end up with nothing when you die. Both are undesirable outcomes unless you are getting everything you desire here or you plan on living forever. My prayer for you is that you accept God's free gift; eternal life through Jesus Christ by asking Him to save you. Romans 10:13. Faith is taking God at His word. 1 John 5:13 There is something spectacular waiting all who reciprocate the love God has extended to mankind. 1 Cor. 2:9 seek and you'll find, countdown21.com
