John Backus, the intentor of the Fortran programming language, has died at the age of 82. The programming language was intented in 1950 by IBM where John worked at the time. Fortran stands for Formula Translator. Before Fortran was completed in 1957 researchers had to input code instructions by hand. Fortran was able to do in 47 statements what had previously taken 1000 machine instructions. John once told a California news paper "It had to happen for computers to propagate."
