how to deal with your kids crying for toys?

do you have some good suggestions for me to deal with a kid crying for toy? you know, my son is 6-year-old now.and when he want to new toy,he will try everyway.most excuses i have used to turn him down are"we should not waste too much money on those things,we should save it to buy house, etc."well, it seems if we got enough money then he can own what kinds of toys he like. what do you say to your kids if they want to more toys?

I was in a shop today and there was a lady there with two littles ones, one in a pram and one standing in the toy section screaming that he wanted some toy there, the ,other was trying to tell him he had to pick something worth no more than $5 but he cried and screamed, I though about what I would do under those circumstances and you know I don't think I would be able to cope...I admire mothers, they really have a tough job.
