Hypnotism - Does it work?

March 22, 2007 7:47am CST
The reason I'm asking is because I want to give up smoking and I have tried many times, with patches, gum, willpower etc, but alas I have failed. So my next idea is to try hypnotism, has anyone tried it for smoking or for something else, as I have no idea about it?

I didn't believe it worked, until I actually witnessed it at my Senior Grad Night. They hired a hypnotist and, oh my gosh! I don't think there is anyway these people could have behaived the way they did without..some help! lol. One girl actually was close to tears because she could NOT lower her arm. If you ever tried it is hard to hold your arm straight out in front of you, and this guy had a LARGE group of my peers stuck with their arms out. No one ever lowered their arm until he told them to, and the arms weren't even shaking out of exhaustion. And after he did that to people, there was one girl in the audience that was totally CRAZY with what he made her do lol! He had people on stage and in the audience hypnotized, it was amazing! He actually got one guy very mad at his hat...this guy was right behind me. He was yelling and cussing at his hat! He even through it across the whole room (BIG room). Me and my friend were afraid this guy was gonna start punching people around him (us). lol. I believe now, and I'm glad I didn't volunteer for him! You just need to find someone to do it for you, but make sure they are VERY creditable, and don't charge too much.

I'm a clinical hypnotherapist, hypnosis is one way to quit smoking. It's as effective, possibly more effective than any other route you may try. It will work for some people and not for others, and there are a couple of reasons why this is the case. The biggest for smoking cessation specifically (compared to say hypnosis for weight loss) is do you really want to quit right now? Or are you quitting because you know you should, or because someone else wants you too. Other factors with an hypnosis session is do you feel comfortable with the hypnotist? Does he/she use language that you use regularly? There's a really well known hypnotist in my area who has some of the best success rates that I know of- but he's originally from another country. I see some of his former clients from time to time who just couldn't 'hear' what he was saying because of his accent & the words he chooses to use. If you have a good imagination, you're likely to have great results. If you are motivated to quit, you'll have good results. And don't think of your previous attempts as failures. I see this is an older post, if you haven't quit yet think of all of these attempts as learning & practicing. You'll be successful with it soon.

my father tried it,paid $700 for it,and it failed. though to be fair,i think it depends on how subseptible the individual person is to hypnotic suggestion. some people it might work better for than others.
