Is anyone else concerned about safety w/ schools that have only 1 entrance/exit?

I moved to North Carolina last May from Florida. I cannot believe the lack of safety for our children with the new school my son attends. It's an elementary school to boot! There is only 1 entrance/exit. Who in their right mind would ok this, putting our children in such danger. Two weeks ago after picking up my son from school at 2:40 in the afternoon and starting to exit the same way I came in; I observe a fire truck trying to gain entrance to the school but can't!! Both lanes; entering and exiting are bumper to bumper and there is no where to pull over to let these emergency vehicles in.The school is located up on a cul-de-sac off of a very busy road and there is a traffic light at this intersection. Like I said there is only 1 way in and the same way to get out. Alot of parents transport their children here. This was very upsetting to me. I think it's time for me to voice my opinion to these officials and get this changed. What do you think? Any information to help me on this venture is welcomed.

You have hit on my favorite topic. I work for a School Safety Contractor. Before I say too much, I want to clarify one thing, the one way in-one way out is for the parking lot area, correct? Or are you talking about the building itself? Just want to make sure I understand your situation before weighing in.

Sometimes there just isn't access available to put in a second entrance. Most schools have an area open for busses only, and this is where emergency vehicles would normally go also. The busses should move out of the way if there is an emergency. There should also be radio communication with them to make this go smoother.
