Advertisements

As a general rule, I hate advertisements in almost all forms. Why? Because 90% of ads that I see for anything are entirely devoid of any information about what is being advertised - simply using colors, layout, and phrasing designed to create a positive response in whomever should see them. Not to mention inaccuracies. For instance, near where I live there is a billboard that says "4'9" is the magic number!" Which is a rare example of an ad providing some form of information - it's about how tall you have to be to ride rides at some amusement park. The thing that irks me about this ad is that 4'9" is not a number. It is a measurement. Arrgh. Then we have billboards around here that just say things like "+ = -". What? A lot of these are designed so that people will go look up more information about whatever it is - but then most of those people won't have a use for whatever it is. Anyhow, as an intelligent human, I feel that I now have the tools at hand to find an appropriate service or product for whatever I want to accomplish, without being bombarded with ads. I wan't to see a movie at the theatre without watching 20 minutes of advertisements, so on and so forth. I understand that revenue from advertisers is behind a lot of things, and that that's why there are so many of them, however I feel with the amount of progress that humanity has made that it is entirely possible to move to a new system of economics, including new, more informational forms of advertisement (and easier to access by the small guy who doesn't have the means to pay for a billboard.) I don't have the time to get into systems theory right now - perhaps in a later posting. So, do you hate most ads? What are some of the ads you dislike? What do you dislike about them? How about advertising and advertising strategies that you like?
