Have you heard of MRSA?

MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) is a strain of the bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, which has become resistant to conventional antibiotics. Here in Ireland, it is rampant in our hospitals. This is what Healthub.com has to say about the infection in our hospitals: "According to a recently published report from the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS), Ireland has one of the highest prevalence of MRSA in Europe, along with the UK and parts of Southern Europe. Indeed, Ireland was highlighted as being one of five European countries to have a significant increase in MRSA prevalence during the period 1999-2002, with MRSA proportions rising from 39% to 45% over this period. " Is this a problem where you live? Would it make you think twice about going t the hospial or using antibiotics?

Ofcourse, this problem exists every where . Here in egypt strains of staph have developed resistance to B-lactamse abtibiotics . The core problem is not the presence of MRSA , but it is where are going to face next decads ? will it develop more resistance . we still , here in egypt , misuse and abuse antibiotics . Patients doesn't recieve complete courses , and they prescripe it for themselves without referring to a doctor or a pharmacist . imagen that the patine , due to his ignorence , goes to the doctor after he had recieved tones of antibiotics that he adminstrated by himself . and the result is "chronic diseases" .however , wherever is the hospital , MRSA exists .

I think the real scandal here is the lack of cleaning in the hospitals, and the lack of personal hygeine on the part of the doctors, nurses and support staff. It is compounded by people being infected and not even being told. I wonder where it will end in terms of bacterial resistence to antibiotics. It is a scary scenario.

Thanks sea money for high lighten the big issue we have here in Ireland. I can say MRSA has been on the rise since 1995 may be before, and can start from infected phenomena- the specific name I'll post it here when I remember it. This is one reason why I left the hospital 6 hours after having my last baby, It's terrible how our hospitals aren't clean enough and how hospital staff just don't wash their hand enough to stop the spread of infection.

I totally agree with you. My child needs a procedure and I am so afraid for him. It is a small procedure but would be moe then enough for him to catch the Superbug. I think we may see if we can get it done in the US over the summer, instead. I is a travesty that the hospitals are so dirty and I am glad it is in the papers so much and people are coming out with their stories.
