What is Core Duo or Dual Core Processor?

Can anyone explain clearly what this means and how it is different from single core? Which is faster, a Pentium 4 3GHz single core or a 1.5GHz core duo? Does it means that it just double the speed of a single core processor? IT expert out there, just need a simple clarification. Thanks!

im not an IT expert, so i am not sure about this. read somewhere that dual core doesn't mean twice processing speed. meaning even if 2 1.5Ghz is not the same as 3.0Ghz processing. it will be somewhat lower than 3.0Ghz. with dual core itmean your processor can process twice more workload than single core processor.
