The twinkling of stars, technically known as stellar scintillation is due to the very unromantic force known as atmospheric turbulence.moving pocket of air in the earth's atmosphere distort the light from the stars.these pockets of air act like lenses, refracting light in random direction n causing the stars to appear to twinkle, this time-lapse photography helps ilustration the phenomenon.A stars mayappear o change colors rapidly due to atmospheric turbulence outside the earth atmosphere the stars don't twinkle.

Very useful and interesting information. I sort of knew that stars twinkle because of the dust in the atmosphere. But didn't really know how to explain it. It's really nice to gaze into the night sky and look at all the stars. It's quite a sight. I might not want to out of the earth's atmosphere then if I don't see the stars the same way as I do here on earth's surface.
