Did you have a traumatic experience that changed your life forever?

I know this sounds crazy, but I will not sing in front of anyone because of what happened to me in the fourth grade. My music teacher stopped class and told everyone I was horrible and sent me out of the class forever. I was upset to say the least. I went home and told my parents and they just laughed at me and made fun of me for years, still do actually. Now I am 40 years old and it still stays with me. I often wonder what kind of teacher does that to a child. Of course I wonder too just how bad I really sing. I have only recently, thanks to my wife's encouragement, begun to sing. She is a professional in music, so it's good to have her support. I know this seems trivial, but I just wondered if anyone else can remember something like this happening to them.

Hi buldwgz, Fortunately I have not had an experience. However, that does not make me feel that I am unable to understand your feelings and the after effect that has happened to. I am truly sorry for what has happened to you and I wonder what sort of teacher she is This teacher may be very good in music but she is zero in understanding others feel especially a child. She should not be forgiven because she has caused a young child to lose self-confidence in music and up to now you do have a situation when it comes to singing. Who knows, if she had been more diplomatic, you could have been someone who can appreciate music and be involved music in a greater way.

Thanks for your understanding. Even though I was traumatised by this teacher, my love for music still remains. I love it. All kinds of music, I just don't sing.

I was told the same thing about me playing the clarinet. It's not an easy thing to hear as a child by any means. My problem was solved for me however when my parents sold my clarinet. We were moving and they needed the money I guess. I have to admit I can't sing, yet still do it all the time lol.

Sounds like you handled it quite well though. I wonder if you still want to learn to play the clarinet, or if you ever learned another instrument. I would love to learn to play a violin, or guitar or even piano, but this event really turned me away from music. Maybe one day I will give it another shot.

Nothing yet, but I am sure I will have some incidences that will scar me for life. Good luck with the singing.

when I was 19 I was in a traffic accident. A women steped out in front of my car. needless to say my life changed. I was in collage and doing well at the time working in the theatre. after that day I quit school and came back home. I started working for a prison and now work a good job in scurity and have a nice home and a good women to stand beside me as I stand beside her. The change was not good but in the long run it was a blessing

It is good that you are doing well now. I can only imagine the trauma that inflicted on both of you.
