do you believe in god and goodness out of fear for the bad and evil??

i have always been pretty agnostic bordering on atheism and it occured to me last night, actually, that maybe i don't believe in god b/c then i would be ackowledging evil.... for example, i have always held a sick fascination and fear of the movie the "exorcist"...it just sends chills up my spine!! i'm wondering if i deny the existence of god so i don't have to deal with the possibilities of things like "possesion" happening??? what do you think about this?? thanks!
