I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter who is very bright and advanced I want to enroll her in pre-k part time in the fall (she will be 3 then) How old was your child when you enrolled them in pre-k, what are your views on this subject? i just want to see how beneficial it could be for my child to go to school at an earlier age.

I think it's fantastic that you have such a gifted child! You must be very proud. I have three children (9yo, 4yo and 2yo). I homeschool them because I could not find a suitable school (public or private) to suit their individual needs. When looking for a school for your child, be sure to find out if they are structured or if they're flexible. Children change their interests as soon as the wind blows.. so I think schools need to accomodate that. Also, I've known of pre-schools that were more of a playcare than anything else. They did arts and crafts, they played outside on the playground, they had story time and the rest was just free time. Letting the children do whatever they wanted. I have a cousin who put her child in preschool and at the end of four months, her son still couldn't tell you the basic/primary colors. He was 3.5yo at the end of this three month period. It just wasn't something that the school focused on. They felt that their job was to socialize the children to prepare them for kindergarden. If you ask me, this wasn't a pre-school.. this was a playcare center. You've got some time yet, do your research on several different centers. Ask yourself what's important for your child.. and make certain that the center that you choose also has these things in mind for the children. Otherwise, it's going to be a waste of your time, energy and money. Good luck!

My daughter was 4 when I enrolled her in pre-k. She only went a few weeks because I didn't like the teacher there she was so mean and put kids in the closet so I didn't like that. So I taught her the ABC and the numbers when she was 2 and she wrote her name at the age of three. It depends on how you feel about it and make sure you know the teacher there too. At least it's not manatory for go to pre-k here

I agree, I love to teach my daughter at home, she knows abcs, can count to 20 in english and 10 in spanish, i would just like to give her a head start in school, it is scary though with teachers and the "troublemakers" in class and all. thanks for the advice

All my kids started when they were 4yrs old. They cant go to kindergarden until there 5 so they would just have to repeat pre school and i didnt want them to be board. Besides i wanted that time to bond more with them.

We enrolled our son August 2004 when he was 3. He turned 4 that October. And we did 2 years of preschool with him. He is now in Kindergarten. He was the first one in his class to be able to count to a hundred and he is so good at math problems. We enrolled my daughter August 2006 in her first year of preschool and she too was 3. She turned 4 this January. We are very pleased with what she is learning there. Before she was kind-of withdrawn around other kids. And now she says she has a boyfriend and she plays with the kids in her class. Her speech has improved; she was a little delayed in her speech skills, and now she is on the same level as the other kids in her class. Plus her teacher told us that she is well advanced when it comes to her motor skills. We did and are doing preschool for our children to help prepare them for school. I think that preschool is totally beneficial to the child. In the way of education and preparing for school, it is one of the best things that we have done for our children.
